Title : Progress of MHD simulations for the interplanetary propagation of coronal mass ejections
Abstract
The goal of the ISEST (International Study of Earth-affecting Solar Transients) VarSITI project is to understand the origin, evolution and propagation of solar transients through the space between the Sun and Earth, and to improve our prediction capability for space weather. We aim at providing an overview on the recent progress on the numerical study of CMEs in the context of Earth-affecting Solar Transients.
We report on a newly developed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation model of the solar wind named EUHFORIA. The model solves for the propagation of the solar wind from 21.5 Solar Radii up to 2AU and beyond and has the option to include Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). We explore the option of internal spheromak-like magnetic fields for CME modeling. This allows the MHD simulations to predict the time profile of the interplanetary magnetic field at Earth.
