PRESENTATION
Title : Ionospheric variation in the African equatorial and low latitude region and performance of the IRI model
Abstract
The increasing use of satellite-based communication and navigation technologies such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) has necessitated a good understanding of the Total Electron Content (TEC) variation, particularly in region like Africa that has the history of limited numbers of ground-based instruments. In this paper, the latitudinal variation of GPS-TEC over six African equatorial and low latitude stations is investigated. The data cover the year 2013, a year of moderate solar activity. The results of the seasonal variation showed that the daytime and the pre-midnight values of TEC is considerably higher in equinoxes and June solstice for stations located close to the geographic equator compared to stations farther from the equator. The difference is however not pronounced in December solstice. Also, the monthly variation showed a semi-annual symmetry and asymmetry in TEC values for stations and farther from the equator respectively. TEC predicted by the three topside options of the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) 2012 model showed seasonal and latitudinal characteristics. The estimation error NeQuick option is smaller than other two options at stations located within the equatorial region in most of the months and seasons. Outside the EIA region, the IRI-01 Corr and IRI-01 options give better predictions. The model performance generally improves as the latitude increase.
