PRESENTATION
Title : What we can learn from the ISEST WG4 campaign study of Sun-Earth events
Abstract
Interplanetary magnetic flux ropes (IFRs) provide information about linkage between solar eruptions and geomagnetic storms. We identified clear IFRs in the solar wind data for 9 cases of the 11 ISEST WG4 campaign events. The analysis shows that the IFR orientations are generally parallel to the orientations of magnetic polarity inversion lines in their solar source regions. This result suggests a possibility that the solar wind magnetic fields to be observed at the Earth and therefore the resulting geomagnetic storms can be predicted from observations of solar eruptions. For the actual storm prediction, however, we need further prediction about the field intensity of the IFR and the propagation the IFR in interplanetary space. Finally, we consider the solar wind control of geomagnetic storm evolution based on the Burton et al. relationship, focusing upon the main mechanism which caused the super storm of 17 March 2015.
