PRESENTATION
Title : The prediction and modelling of auroral absorption during interplanetary coronal mass ejection events
Abstract
Enhanced high frequency radiowave absorption in the high latitude ionosphere is caused by energetic particle precipitation, including (>keV) energetic electrons from closed field lines and (>MeV) protons from the solar wind. Hence, particle precipitation into the upper atmosphere may indicate the propagation of radio waves through the ionosphere. Although various methods and models have been previously proposed for auroral and polar cap absorptions , efforts continue to improve these models. This study combines data from the Imaging Riometer for Ionospheric Studies (IRIS) located at Kilpisjärvi in northern Finland, and obtained during solar cycle 23 (1996-2009) with solar wind parameters measured at the L1 point between the Earth and Sun, to determine whether there are empirical relationships which may provide the basis for a statistical model of auroral absorption and a model that could estimate radio absorption during severe space weather events of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMES )
