PRESENTATION
Title : Geomagnetic consequences of interacting coronal mass ejections
Abstract
We have analyzed ten interacting coronal mass ejection (CME) events on different dates which were directed to the Earth and caused moderate and strong geomagnetic storms in the solar cycle 24. These selected interacting CMEs were observed on May 23-24, 2010, February 14-15, 2011, August 3-4, 2011, January 18-19, 2012, March 4-5, 2012, June 13-14, 2012, September 25-28, 2012, November 9-10, 2012, October 25, 2013 and March 14-15, 2015. We used the in-situ observations obtained from OMNI and WIND data with high time resolution for solar wind parameters. The interaction occurs at different distance from the Sun ranging from 35 Rs to 185 Rs as observed from Heliospheric Imager onboard STEREO. Our analysis shows that most of the interacting CMEs arrive at 1 AU as separate structures. Only two events were observed as merged structure. In an attempt to understand the geomagnetic signatures of interacting CMEs, we found that some of them resulted in two step geomagnetic storms while some occur as a single step storm. In-situ measurements also show that many of the interacting CMEs display SSC and a shock at L1 point.
