ELECTRON MICROBURST


Electron microbursts are the short duration (less than one second) energetic electron precipitation into the Earth’s atmosphere, mainly observed in the recovery phase of geomagnetic storms at L = 4 - 8 and 06 - 18 local times. The microbursts are thought to be caused by chorus waves that are generated by equatorial plasma instabilities. This experiment shall focus on estimating spatial size of electron microbursts and measuring energy dispersion with high temporal resolution.



EXPECTED RESULTS FROM THE SNIPE MISSION
Observations using low-orbit multi-satellites are expected to answer the following scientific questions.
• How small electron precipitation structure exists and what is the mechanism of this precipitation phenomenon?
• How does electron microburst interact with waves?
• How large is the contribution of radiation belt loss due to the microburst precipitation?
